In addition to key industry stakeholders taking the stage to talk about their experiences with natural refrigerants, shecco Managing Director & ATMOsphere Chairman Marc Chasserot and shecco Events Manager Clemence Girard-Reydet explain what else to expect from ATMOsphere America 2014.
R744.com: Over the past years, CO2 has been making large strides in North America. What are the main discussion topics we can expect from ATMOsphere America 2014?
Marc Chasserot: Major technology developments & Market trends regarding CO2 will be presented by some of the industry’s leading companies such as Hillphoenix, Carnot Refrigeration, Mayekawa, Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration, Systemes LMP; and shecco will present its latest research regarding the state of the industry. There will be a large focus on natural refrigerants in commercial refrigeration, but we are also introducing additional topics to this year’s program including natural refrigerant use in air conditioning, heat pumps and HVAC. Furthermore, we are broadening the platform of discussion with new sessions such as an Energy Providers Session: Heat Pumps & Refrigeration, and an EOS Climate sponsored Workshop, which will focus on carbon finance/offsets programs.
One of the key areas of focus of ATMOsphere America 2014 will be on the progress CO2 technologies have made in the commercial refrigeration session. The conference will feature a two-part Food Retail Panel. In the first part of the session some of North America’s leading retailers, including Delhaize America, Walgreens, Whole Foods, etc., will speak about their experiences with natural refrigerants, talking about both the benefits and challenges. The second part will allow key suppliers and contractors to follow up on the discussions and present some of their most innovative solutions. During the Commercial Refrigeration Technology Case Study Session, companies including CAREL, Danfoss, Parker, Zero Zone and DC engineering will present their latest projects and products, for instance at a Whole Foods store in Castro, a CO2 transcritical Whole Foods store in Brooklyn and a project involving CO2 solutions for Genentech.
CO2 technology will also feature heavily in the Technology Case Study Sessions for industrial & transport refrigeration, as well as heat pumps, HVAC and other applications. Carrier Transicold will be presenting its innovative line of CO2 shipping containers, while Alfa Laval and VaCom Technologies will focus on CO2/NH3 cascade technology. In addition, SCM Frigo will talk about the use of CO2 Booster (MT and LT) technology for an industrial application in a meat factory, and KAV Consulting will focus on CO2 evaporative condensers and evaporative transcritical CO2 gas coolers.

Clémence Girard Reydet: One of the most exciting things about this year’s conference is the number of people participating, which is expected to be over 250. We decided to move the event to the West Coast to give some recognition to the great achievements in regards to natural refrigerant technology and legislation, but also to attract a broader range of participants. It seems the formula has worked. With over a month to go before the event, we already have more participants registered than ever before.
With the new location in San Francisco, the Regulations, Standards & Training Session will feature not only speakers from the GreenChill Parntership (U.S. EPA), but also representatives from the California Air Resources Board and San Francisco State University providing a more local perspective. There will also be a focus on CO2 commercial refrigeration projects centered in the area, such as a Whole Foods store in Castro. One of the main highlights and a tribute to the new location will be an optional Napa Valley Wine Tour on Friday, June 20th.
R744.com: You’ve announced that shecco will host a Post-Event Workshop to discuss the idea of a global natural refrigerants label. Can you tell us more about this?
MC: The post-event workshop will gather a small group of 30-40 people maximum, which is why it is on an invitation-only basis. Participants will have in-depth discussions on how to implement a voluntary natural refrigerant label for the industry. It will be very hands-on and interactive, to encourage active participation of the guests in the workshop and make sure we have valuable and tangible results to share globally after the event.
R744.com: We’ve heard that you are exploring some new topics at the conference; can you tell us more about them?
CGR: We are introducing some new sessions. This includes an Energy Providers Session, chaired by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), where several energy providers such as Southern California Edison, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) and Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) will speak about their projects and incentives. Other new features are an HVAC Session organised by end user Genentech and an EOS Climate Workshop: Managing your assets – Financing the transition. This year’s conference will also feature several parallel Technology Case Study Sessions and a lunch-time Poster Session focusing on commercial, light commercial, industrial & transport refrigeration, as well as heat pumps and HVAC.

MC: As the interest in and use of natural refrigerants continues to grow across the globe, we will continue to expand the ATMOsphere conference series to new and exciting locations. After a successful first edition, we will once again be organising ATMOsphere Asia in Tokyo in February 2015, shortly followed by the sixth annual ATMOsphere Europe 2015 in March, which we expect to be one of the largest gatherings of natural refrigerant experts we have ever organised. We are also already anticipating the 4th annual ATMOsphere America 2015 and exploring new locations such as Atlanta, which is close to some industry leading manufacturers and could accommodate a more “trade show” style ATMOsphere conference, a concept we are considering for next year.
In addition, we will expand the ATMOsphere Networking Meetings, which until now have only taken place in Tokyo, to both Europe and North America. The goal of these types of networking meetings is to help accelerate the market uptake of natural refrigerant technologies by connecting industry stakeholders and discussing the latest market developments and technology innovations on a more regular and informal basis.
