The OEM makes ammonia/CO2 cascade and transcritical CO2 systems.
Kysor/Warren – an OEM that has installed an ammonia/CO2 cascade system in a Piggly Wiggly supermarket, along with a number of transcritical CO2 installations – is now a Silver Partner of this website.
The Columbus, Ga-based company, a division and brand of global refrigeration equipment maker Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration, understands that the market is ripe for the uptake of natural refrigerant-based technology and has been actively installing, and advocating for, such systems.
“Some very exciting technology is being developed in the industry today with both transcritical CO2 and ammonia cascade systems,” said Michael Lehtinen, Kysor/Warren’s marketing director. “I believe that we will continue to see the technology being refined and evolving over time. As the industry does this, alternative refrigerant technology will become very cost competitive and exceedingly mainstream.”
Kysor/Warren’s Piggly Wiggly ammonia/CO2 cascade system installation in 2015 was only the fourth of its kind in the U.S. The OEM has a number of transcritical CO2 systems installations throughout North America and many more in Europe.

Lehtinen said that the company’s focus on ammonia/CO2 cascade systems has been intentional.
“There was a reason we have spent the time on ammonia technology here in the U.S.,” he said. “We wanted to make clear that we have the engineering expertise and capability to bring all types of natural refrigeration solutions to supermarket applications. There was also definitive need to provide operators with a natural refrigerant option that is viable in warmer climates.
“With the Piggly Wiggly," he continued, "we have demonstrated that you can successfully design, install and operate an ammonia cascade system and derive significant energy savings, trouble-free operation, reduced operational costs and effective servicing of the system over a two-year period."
While natural-refrigerant based systems installations still only make up a portion of Kysor/Warren’s portfolio, Lehtinen believes the market for natural refrigerant-based systems will only continue to grow, with Kysor/Warren being a leader in their industry-wide adoption.
