"Eco Cute" is the commercial name of CO2 heat pump water heaters sold in Japan mostly for domestic use. This Flash News gives an overview of recent developments in Japan and their impact on other world regions.

1 million Eco Cute units to be sold by end-2007

According to the Heat Pump and Storage Heater Centre, sales of Eco-Cute units will exceed 1 million units this autumn. The positive trend is in line with the Japanese government’s target of 5.2 million sold units by 2010.

New CO2 Heat Pumps for ice skating, factories & hospitals

The manufacturer Maekawa Seisakusho has launched a new CO2 Heat Pump Eco-Cute system for hot and cool water supply in food factories, ice skating rinks, public hot baths, hotels and hospitals. According to the newspaper "Nikkan Kensetsu Kogyo Shimbun", the units will be priced at ¥8.8 million (€53,000). The company hopes for high sales on the domestic market with a future expansion to the market for ice skating rinks in Europe and North America.

Expanding Eco Cute market could trigger demand for copper pipes

The Japanese copper pipe industry hopes to revive demand for copper piping with the expanding market for CO2 hot water heat pumps. Recently, the domestic market has been stagnant as the majority of air-conditioning manufacturing has shifted abroad. According to "Nikkan Sangyo Shimbun", the industry could now benefit from the rising share of high-pressure heat pump systems.

Plumbing material for Eco Cute units developed

The market for EcoCute pluming material is expected to expand. CK Metal has developed "ecocute sets" with pipes, valves, and adaptors to be sold to manufacturers and companies. For the new products, the company targets a 30% market share by 2009, reports "Denpa Shimbun". The new 3-layer pipes by CK Metal, with an aluminium layer between two resin layers, will expand less compared to resin pipes when hot water flows inside. On top of that, by using slot connectors, it does not require welding. Copper and resin pipes are usually used to connect a tank and a hot water unit.

Industry demands extended grant system for CO2 heat pumps

On 20 September, a Ministry Committee held a hearing to discuss energy saving policy measures. According to "Denki Shimbun", industry representatives from electric power, gas, and energy service companies, as well as department stores, demanded to widen the grant system for the installation of CO2 heat pumps and storage heating systems.
