"Eco Cute" is the commercial name of CO2 heat pump water heaters sold in Japan mostly for domestic use. This Flash News gives an overview of recent developments in Japan and their impact on other world regions.

New campaign to celebrate first million Eco-Cute sold

The "Thank you 1,000,000 EcoCute Sales" campaign will run until March 2008 to promote the sales of CO2 hot water heat pumps through a new logo. It is a joint project by the Electric Business Alliance, the Japan Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Industry Association, and the Heat Pump and Storage Heater Centre. The campaign uses mass media, industry websites, and events to celebrate 1 million Eco-Cute units sold since their commercialization in 2001. According to "Denki Shimbun", 1 million units equivalents a reduction of 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

All Electrifying campaigns with focus on CO2 heat pumps

Several "All Electrifying" campaigns by large Japanese power companies are currently promoting the use of EcoCute units at home. Running until end-2007, the campaigns offer incentives for consumers purchasing EcoCute models for hot water supply, cooking, and heating. According to "Denki Shimbun", the Tohoku Electric Power Company is inviting consumers to compare their projected electricity bills before and after they switch to a system running completely on electricity. Cooperating retailers are targeting sales of 9,000 EcoCute units for the six Tohoku prefectures, converting 5,000 houses to all electrifying systems.

Sanyo will market new EcoCute series for cold areas…

Sanyo Electrics will launch its new "Sanyo Ecocute G Series" especially designed for cold areas. The new models are designed to perform at temperatures down to -20°C, featuring a unique system to stop the unit from freezing without a heater.

…and Mitsubishi Electronics also focuses on units for low temperatures

In Japan, Mitsubishi Electronics Living Systems supports the all electrifying campaign by focusing on heat pump units especially designed for cold areas with outside temperatures of -25°C. End of August, the company held a "Cold Climate Heat Pump Fair" attended by more than 1,000 people.

Hitachi House launches 4 new EcoCute models

Hitachi House Tec is launching 2 fully automated models and 2 hot water only units. According to “Netsusangyo Keizai Shimbun”, the company will thus offer a total of 9 Eco-Cute models, expecting to sell 15,000 units in the 2nd half of 2007. To enable an easier installation, all new models will feature a small window in the water tank unit. Hitachi’s hot water units can be installed using existing plumbing.
