On 28 June, the largest cold storage facility for aquatic products in Northeast China was established in Dalian. The Zhangzi Island project is the first large-scale cold storage logistics base adopting a NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system in China. The project is regarded as a milestone for CO2 refrigeration in the country.

On 28 June, the completion ceremony for the largest NH3/CO2 cold storage logistics base in China was held in Zhangzi Island of Dalian. The project has been recognised as one of the key demonstration projects for alternative refrigerant technology by the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection. Its establishment is regarded by Chinese industrial experts as a milestone for CO2 refrigeration and the beginning of a new era in the country’s industrial refrigeration with environmental friendly alternative refrigerants.

Zhangzi Island is located in a clean and pollution-free area in the southern of the Changshan Islands. Environmental protection is one of the key concerns in the selection of refrigeration technology for the project. Natural refrigerants CO2 and ammonia are finally used in the projects considering their advantages not only in terms of environment protection but also energy efficiency and safety.

90% lower ammonia charge amount ensures seafood safety

The project is the first one in China that installed both NH3/CO2 cascade & brine systems. In the processing plant, CO2 brine system is installed and sea water is used to cool the high level ammonia refrigeration. The innovative design of the NH3/CO2 cascade system reduced ammonia refrigerant charge by more than 90% and limits the NH3 refrigerant to inside the refrigeration control room, fully satisfying safety requirements.

Danfoss provides latest CO2 solutions to ensure reliability of the refrigeration system

CO2 solutions and components of Danfoss are widely used in the project. Its AKS 4100U series radar liquid level sensor and the ICM series motor control valve are used for liquid level controlling in the NH3/CO2 cascade system. In the freezing room, Danfoss’ ICF series valve station is also used, which reduces the required installation area by 2/3 and the welding process by 80%. The SVL series refrigeration components are also used in the project.

Another 30,000 tons CO2 cold storage is planned

According to Yantai Moon Group, the designer and contractor of the project, Dalian Zhangzidao Fishery Group, the owner of the cold storage plant has expressed complete satisfaction, and is planning on using CO2 refrigerant systems for the company’s next 30,000 tons low-temperature cold storage facility in China.
