UPDATE: New GUIDE on NH₃/CO₂ Secondary Refrigeration Systems

The free publication “Examples of NH₃/CO₂ secondary systems for cold store operators” is the next in a series of free publications to inform industry and policy decision makers about sustainable refrigeration technology that provide investment security at high efficiency and safety levels. Being endorsed by the “Sustainable Energy Europe” programme, the publication also features an introduction by Britta Thomson, Member of the European Parliament:

Tackling climate change is one of our times greatest challenges. Huge efforts, good intentions and large ambitions have not yet solved the problem. We must keep searching for more solutions to decrease greenhouse gases. The world’s focus is mainly on CO₂ emissions, but we have to include the non-CO₂ gases, as well...".

Undoubtedly, the advantage of using CO₂ as a secondary refrigerant is safety: the ammonia charge is reduced by up to 90% compared to an ammonia-only system and is confined in the machinery room” says Alexandra Maratou, lead author of the publication. “It enables the use of ammonia even in certain European countries where the use of traditional direct expansion ammonia systems is practically very difficult due to regulatory restrictions. Meanwhile, in the run up to the 2015 deadline by when the use of ozone depleting substances in Europe will be totally banned, we expect the retrofit and replacement of the remaining HCFC refrigeration installations to pick up. Clearly, the solution examined in this publication adds a robust contender to what could follow next.”
