Danfoss Signs MoU to Promote NatRefs in India

Danish HVAC&R manufacturer Danfoss has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to develop a research and training center for natural refrigerants, including CO₂ (R744).

The agreement includes an initial investment of ₹10 million (US$137,600).

“This collaboration with IISc endeavors to enhance R&D and skill development in the use of natural refrigerants,” said Ravichandran Purushothaman, President of Danfoss Industries in India, in a statement from Danfoss.

“Recognizing the skill and knowledge gap that exists in the labor force of the nation, we at Danfoss have been consistent in our efforts to forge active industry-academia collaborations with leading institutions in the field,” Purushothaman added. “It is our vision that collaborations of this nature will not only aid in curriculum building, but also ensure that the workforce of the future is employment-ready and equipped with the right skill sets.”

The IISc is a public research university located in Bangalore in Southern India.

The agreement aims to build knowledge about natural refrigerants in India, both at industry and academic levels. The goal is to provide best-practice training at a number of levels from students to refrigeration technicians and practicing engineers.

It has a duration of four years, with the option to extend for a further year. As part of the MoU, Danfoss will deliver hands-on training in the use of natural refrigerants, both at IISc and Danfoss’ own campus. The company also aims to help students and academics by publishing their work at international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.

“We look forward to the engagement with Danfoss India and to providing our students and teachers with rich training in cutting-edge refrigerant technologies,” said Professor Pradip Dutta from the Department of Mechanical Engineering IISc. “Danfoss’ experience and domain knowledge in the fields of cooling, refrigeration and cold-chain uniquely positions them as the appropriate industry partner for IISc.”
