French component manufacturer Carly has introduced a new disinfectant for refrigeration and air conditioning systems that is effective against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Carly developed the CARLYSAFE-RTU disinfectant after receiving numerous customer requests in March 2020, when COVID-19 became a pandemic. After asking a third-party laboratory to test the product’s effectiveness against SARS-CoC-2 based on the European Union’s EN 14476+A2 standard, Carly launched it in October.

“As soon as the product was available, major distributors of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment confirmed their initial interest by placing significant stock orders,” said Cyrille Berthet, CEO of Carly.

Carly is well-known as a supplier of components for transcritical and subcritical CO2 (R744) systems ranging from 46-140bar, including oil separators, oil filters, filter driers, filter-drier shells, dirt filters and mufflers.

Due to the inherent risks of testing products on an actual SARS-CoV-2 strain, the CARLYSAFE-RTU was tested against another human strain of coronavirus, the HCoV-229E, which is considered a “mimic” of the virus causing COVID-19, according to Berthet.

Carly’s website describes the new product as a “ready-to-use disinfectant for hard surfaces with a wide spectrum of activities intended for disinfection in sensitive areas which require high hygiene standards,” making it suitable for air conditioning and other cooling applications. The product can be used to spray or mist surfaces.

In addition to being virucidal, the new disinfectant is also classified as bactericidal, fungicidal and levuricidal. For bacteria it meets EN 13697 and the EN 1276 standards. For fungi (including yeast), it meets EN 13697 and EN 1650 standards. CARLYSAFE-RTU also complies with the European Biocidal Regulation (528/2012) – TP02 and TP04.

The active ingredients in CARLYSAFE-RTU are quaternary ammonium compounds, benzylalkyl, C12-16 dimethyl, chlorides (CAS 68424-85-1) – 0.45% m/m.
