The leading global provider of specialized products and engineering solutions has added its first components optimised for CO2 refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps to R744.com. All brazed heat exchangers are also available as high-pressure versions.

Alfa Laval is presenting the first product series from its wide array of solutions for CO2 (R744) industrial refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump solutions on R744.com. All brazed heat exchangers (BHEs) feature a reduced weight, a compact design, an innovative materials use and construction, as well as an improved cooling or heating capacity. Used in a wide range of applications, Alfa Laval’s heat exchangers can serve as high pressure condensers in chillers and heat pumps, as heat exchangers in cascade units for industrial refrigeration and supermarkets, as well as working as an evaporator, economizer, or desuperheater.

All presented BHEs are optimised to work with the natural refrigerant CO2. In daily fatigue cycles during on/off operations, Alfa Laval ensured that the units with single and double refrigerant circuit are highly reliable. Brazing the stainless steel plates together eliminates the need for gaskets and thick frame plates. The brazing material seals and holds the plates together at the contact points, ensuring optimal heat transfer efficiency and pressure resistance. The plate design guarantees the longest possible life.

The products

Concretely, Alfa Laval has added the following products to the R744.com products database:

AC230 (also as ACH230 with Design Pressure 45 bar): Specifically developed to work in air conditioning, refrigeration, and heat pump applications, the single and double refrigerant circuit unit can be used for chillers in the 50-250 kW range and heat pumps in the 30-150 kW range. It is suitable to work as an evaporator and as a condenser. Compared to existing products, it demonstrates a 5% improvement in COP or 20% in cooling capacity. As ACH230 it can be used in CO2 cascade systems.

AC70 (also as ACH70 with Design Pressure 45 bar): The single refrigerant circuit is optimal for chillers in the 10-80 kW range and heat pumps in the 5-40 kW range. It can work as an evaporator, condenser, and economizer. As ACH70 it can be used in CO2 cascade systems.

AC350 (also as ACH350 with Design Pressure 45 bar): AlfaChill350 is a brazed plate heat exchanger and condenser optimised for air conditioning and refrigeration. It integrates a new patented distribution system that significantly improves the distribution of refrigerants inside the heat exchanger. Using both the “Dualancer” and the “Equalancer” technology, the unit ensures a low risk of freezing, thereby allowing for high evaporation temperatures and improved COP even at high capacity. As ACH350 it can be used in CO2 cascade systems.

AC500 (also as ACH500 with Design Pressure 45 bar): The single and double refrigerant circuit unit is optimised for chillers in the 200-600 kW range. Used as an evaporator and a condenser in chillers and heat pumps, it can be used with either CO2 or propane, like most other Alfa Laval’s BHEs presented on R744.com.

CBXP52: As one of the most recent product innovations, Alfa Laval designed the brazed heat exchanger optimised to withstand high pressures without the need of costly frames. Thanks to its specific design it can reach pressures as high as 70 bar at +90°C or 65 at +125°C. It can be used in transcritical systems as evaporator or intermediate heat exchanger, as well as in CO2 cascade systems and heat pumps.

HP series: The complete range of high pressure BHEs benefits from a design pressure of 45 bar. It can be used in CO2 cascade systems in commercial refrigeration applications or in air conditioning applications featuring R410 refrigerant.
