The ATMOsphere Review Panel has selected the third round of CO2 case studies – from Hillphoenix, YourCleanEnergy, and International Copper Alliance (ICA) & MicroGroove with Kellen – to be presented at ATMOsphere America 2017.

Taking place in Loews Coronado Bay Resort, San Diego, ATMOsphere America 2017 serves as the leading forum for discussion about the business case for natural refrigerants in North America.

Over 400 participants from the US, Canada, Mexico and the rest of the world will take part in the discussion together with end users. Attendees will hear about latest technology, legislation and innovation related to natural refrigerants.

The presentations are:

Hillphoenix | Lab Study of a Transcritical CO2 System with Parallel Compression and a Gas Ejector System – Measured Performance Applied to Bin Analysis by Jeff Newel

A transcritical CO2 booster system operating at the Hillphoenix Refrigeration Systems Lab in Covington GA was outfitted with a CO2 gas ejector system to improve system efficiency.

This study will compare the ejector system with the operation of a parallel compression only system and a standard transcritical booster system along with explaining the operational differences between the systems.

YourCleanEnergy | A year on  Innovative Transcritical CO2 Heat Pump System Providing Lower Cost Hydronic Heat than Oil Boilers by Andy Baker

An innovative and sustainable trans-critical CO2 heat pump system of 80 ton capacity was installed January 2016 at the 120,000 square foot Alaska SeaLife Center to displace conventional oil and electric boilers. The CO2 heat pump system was further improved in mid-2016 and has produced significant cost savings for a second year thru the sub-arctic winter of Seward, Alaska. This project required a challenging integration of four Mayekawa transcritical CO2 heat pumps into a large and existing conventional medium temperature hydronic system.

This case study has the primary goal of evaluating the market potential of this transcritical CO2 heat pump system to offset and ultimately replace the use of oil boilers in cold climates, and other heat pump systems that utilise synthetic refrigerants with significantly higher greenhouse warming potential (GWP). A comparison in performance and refrigerant leak events of the new Mayekawa CO2 heat pumps will be made to a pair of older Trane RTWD rotary screw heat pumps operating in the same facility that utilise R134a (GWP= 1400).

ICA & MicroGroove with Kellen | Copper Heat Exchanger Coils for Natural Refrigerants  a Selection of Case Studies Showcasing Advantages by Yoram Shabtay (Heat Transfer Technologies LLC) & Nigel D. Cotton (MicroGroove)

The use of natural refrigerants in refrigeration equipment necessitates the redesign of heat exchangers. In particular, R744 heat exchangers must withstand high pressure because of the extraordinary high operating pressures of R744 systems; and R290 heat exchangers must minimize refrigerant volume because of the R290’s Level-3 flammability rating.

In this paper, several case studies are presented from various coil makers and refrigeration equipment makers to illustrate the design principles and manufacturing methods. Successful designs have been realized using high strength copper tube alloys and the development of new manufacturing equipment for smaller diameter copper tubes. Recent development in design simulations as well as real world applications will be presented.
