The EHI Retail Institute award went to Aldi South for having the best concept among chain stores in terms of resource conservation and energy savings across its operations.

During the EHI Energy Management Congress on 15-16 November in Cologne, Germany, Aldi South got the Energy Management Award 2016 in the category of chain store companies in recognition of its comprehensive and strategic approach to energy efficiency.

The strategy includes environmental practices for product refrigeration, air-conditioning and lighting and has been applied in most existing stores.

Since 2010, Aldi South has been installing only CO2 refrigeration racks in new buildings and has been using the natural refrigerant in new centralised systems in existing buildings. All the firm’s plug-in refrigeration units currently use propane, another natural refrigerant.

The company also produces its own energy. With more than 1,000 roofs equipped with solar panels, Aldi South has proven that environmental protection is both financially feasible and beneficial in the medium term.

It is the second time that Aldi South has won an EHI Energy Management Award, having received one already in 2008. The jury this year was convinced of the positive developments shown in the intervening years. A management decision to make high investments in sustainable technologies has paid off and energy efficiency in Aldi South’s branch network has increased constantly.
