Green & Cool keeps food chilled in Scandinavia’s largest mall

The largest shopping mall in Scandinavia will officially open its doors in November this year. In light of its dedicated focus on installing environmentally friendly technology, leading manufacturer Green & Cool will equip many of the mall’s leading retailers with its CO2 refrigeration systems.

The mall - situated just minutes from downtown Stockholm and the Swedish national football arena (Friends Arena in Stockholm) - contains over 100,000m2 of retail space, including 250 stores spread over three floors, as well as a 15-theatre cinema complex.

Therefore, sustainability represented a clear priority throughout the project, from design and planning to production and tenants’ leases. The demand for cooling was no different.

To meet these strict environmental requirements most of the food retailers, including ICA Kvantum, Max Hamburgers, SF Filmstaden Cinema, Unibail-Rodamco and Panini Internazionale, have chosen refrigeration systems from Green & Cool.

All of the systems Green & Cool will provide are CO2 systems, ranging from small split versions to larger Booster units.

One of the Supermarkets, ICA Kvantum, has installed one of Green & Cool’s 110/35kW capacity booster units. The system is equipped to provide hot tap water at +60°C as well as a 214 kW heat-reclaim system to heat the shopping area and the local warehouse. This will ensure ICA is self-sufficient and avert any need to purchase heat from the district-heat supplier.

Sales Engineer at Green & Cool, Kent Hofmann, said the company’s involvement in the project was straight forward given their existing relationships with installers and the demand from tenants for efficiency reasons.

“We didn’t have any active marketing input in this case. Many of the installers already knew of us, but in most cases it seems to have been the tenants themselves who came to the conclusion that our solutions are one of the best,” he said.

The Mall of Scandinavia is one of only a handful of shopping centres in Europe to have been given an Excellent rating under the global environmental and sustainability standards BREEAM, for its design. The environmental assessment scheme is the most widely used in Europe and provides a comprehensive rating of the environmental performance of buildings.

Green & Cool’s rapid growth

The company’s sales engineer Johan Hellman confirmed that CO2 technology is becoming ever popular in Europe, with Green & Cool’s business increasing by 83% since 2013. And although Hellman said there were no immediate plans to open a new production facility.

Green & Cool has stepped up production capacity at its Profoid factory in France while introducing an advanced quality control programme.

Marketing Manager Micael Antonsson cited the successful introduction of the F-Gas regulation in Europe as the reason for the unprecedented demand for Green & Cool’s products.

“We had anticipated that demand would rise with the introduction of the F-Gas Regulation on 1 January 2015. But the level of interest was significantly higher than we had forecast, and when we could not keep up it affected our customers. As a result of the investment in production we can now live up to our promised delivery times,” he said.
