27 year proven track record for Danfoss’ AKV expansion valves for retail cooling

The Danfoss AKV electronic expansion valve for retail cooling applications was introduced on the market over 27 years ago. Since then, it has become one of the most used expansion devices with more than 2 million active valves across the industry. According to Danfoss, taking advantage of the full ADAP-KOOL® system can lower energy consumption by up to 33%. The AKVH valve in the series is designed for CO2 refrigerant.

With a 27 year proven track record and over 2 million active AKV valves in the field, Danfoss’ AKV electronic expansion valve ensures food safety in retail cooling applications. The AKVH type is specifically designed for use with CO2 refrigerant. Through its extensive and various testing during production, including pressure tests and internal and external leakage tests, the AKV minimises failure risks in the field. Its minimum lifetime of 10 years and more than 50 million cycles, along with its flexibility, energy saving potential and Danfoss’s extensive support programme, have made it one of the most used electronic expansion valves within the food retail industry.

The AKVH is one of the most used expansion devices in CO2 applications for food retail purposes. One of its many strengths is the opportunity to service the valve, should that be needed. The built-in filter ensures that if piping has not been cleaned properly, the valve will continue to work. If cleaning is needed due to less effective installation work or other reasons for dirt in the system, it is easy to do. This ensures the end user has minimum negative impact in a service situation, as the operation is fast and simple compared to replacing the valve.

The expansion device and solenoid (on/off) valve function of the AKV valve are in one simple unit. Therefore, cooling systems with the AKV valve have fewer connections, as only one valve is needed, ensuring lower refrigerant cost compared to the more complex TXV technology. The solenoid design ensures that the valve always closes during power failure.

Basic specifications

  • AKVH 10 type for R744 refrigerant
  • Refrigeration capacity 0.4 kW to 11 kW
  • Freezing capacity 0.8 kW to 22 kW
  • Replaceable orifice assembly
  • Both expansion valve and solenoid valve
  • Electronic coil controller for lower valve noise level, energy saving, higher valve MOPD and longer valve lifetime

Product advantages

  • Reliable - Simplicity and robustness of the design reduce possible failures in the field
  • Durable – valve lifetime of minimum 10 years and 50+ million cycles
  • Proven – AKV valves have been on the market for 27+ years and over 2 million AKV valves are active in the field
  • Energy savings - 10% energy savings over TXV technology and 33% savings with full ADAP-KOOL® system
  • Low leakage rate – 0.00001% leakage rate
