Carrier Kältetechnik Schweiz installed the 100th CO2OLtec Integral system in a SPAR store in Schüpfen, Switzerland, which opened in June of 2013. The CO2 system provides a fully integrated approach to the store’s refrigeration, space heating and cooling, ventilation and lighting needs.

With the implementation of the transcritical CO2OLtec Integral system, the supermarket benefits from a reduction in energy consumption of up to 30%, a carbon footprint reduction of more than half in comparison to a R404A refrigeration system with gas boiler, and a single point of contact for purchasing, installation and maintenance service through Carrier.

Our customer can now take advantage of demonstrated energy cost savings of up to 30 percent over the system’s lifecycle, along with the future-proof security that comes with using CO2 as a refrigerant,” said Philippe Widemann, Managing Director, Carrier Kältetechnik Schweiz.

All year comfort provided by the CO2OLtec Integral system

The CO2OLtec Integral system leverages the waste heat created during the refrigeration process to cover the full heating requirements of the entire store, all year round, thus eliminating the need for a conventional gas heating system.

During warm months, it provides cooling to ensure a comfortable shopping and working environment, and what is more, the cold air in front of refrigerated cabinets is drawn out and redistributed via the ventilation system.

Features and advantages of CO2OLtec:

  • Provides both low temperature and medium temperature refrigeration solutions for all retail store formats
  • Low temperature compressors are connected directly to the suction side of the medium temperature compressors. This booster design, coupled with the advantages of not requiring oil separators and associated components, increases the efficiency of the CO2OLtec system by an average of 10%
  • Using CO2 as a refrigerant delivers very low TEWI (Total Equivalent Warming Impact), derived from the indirect emissions and the direct emissions over the life cycle of the system
  • System design allows the working pressure within the store and cold rooms to be reduced to 35-45 bar
  • Advantage of reduced operating costs due to higher efficiency and avoidance of F-gas mandatory inspections

Carrier building management system

The performance of the CO2OLtec fully integrated concept is coordinated by Carrier’s intelligent building management system, which controls the interaction among the various components of the commercial refrigeration, heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting systems, to achieve optimal levels of energy efficiency.

Commercial refrigeration in a supermarket is proportionally the largest refrigeration system, the largest waste heat generator and the largest energy consumer. The concept of bringing these all ‘under one roof’ and optimally harmonising the controls is a future-proof idea,” Elias Steiner, Head of Construction Department and Facility Management, SPAR Gruppe Schweiz.
