Edeka Südwest has received the EHI Energy Management Award 2013. The jury praised the broad measurements taken by Edeka to protect the climate and improve energy efficiency. Today, the retailer already has more than 170 CO2 transcritical and cascade stores in operation.
The EHI Energy Management Award recognises outstanding concepts for energy reduction and climate protection in the German-speaking retail sector. Edeka Südwest was awarded the prize by a jury of professionals thanks to the broad measures it has taken to protect the environment and its integrated approach to energy management. Other features that impressed were the level of innovation and sustainability.
More than 170 CO2 transcritical and cascade stores in operation
Since 2009 transcritical CO2 systems and subcritical hybrid cascade systems have been the preferred choice at Edeka Südwest. As a result, today the company has an impressive number of natural refrigeration systems in operation:
- About 110 transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems
- About 60 CO2 subcritical hybrid cascade systems
Further measures taken by Edeka to increase energy efficiency and environmental performance include:
- Geothermal power plants in 59 stores
- LED-lighting for 93.000 m2 shopping area
New environmentally friendly technology is applied to new and converted stores and logistic centres. For each new and converted store an individual energy concept is elaborated for the heating, ventilation, cooling, refrigeration systems, lighting and heat recovery systems.
Jury honours sustainable and environmentally friendly investment strategy
The jury drew attention to Edeka’s investment strategy for new stores, which is focused on sustainability and climate protection.
Ralf Huber, Managing Director of Edeka Südwest said: “Our target is to harmonioulsy combine economical and ecological aspects. This is part of our corporate strategy. That’s why energy management plays an important role at Edeka and we are pleased that our efforts are recognised with this award”.
Stefan Herre, authorised officer and head of Edeka’s real estate department added: “The award is a great recognition for our team, which permanently strives to develop environmentally friendly solutions.”
31 stores with GreenBuilding partner status
Within the framework of the European Commission GreenBuilding initiative to improve the energy efficiency of private and public commercial buildings, 31 Edeka Südwest stores have already achieved the GreenBuilding partner status. This status is only awarded to buildings with particularly low energy consumption.
