New R744 refrigeration system for hospitals

A newly installed refrigeration system by Green & Cool provides reliable air conditioning in nursing and process rooms at the Sollefteå Hospital. On top of environmental benefits, the energy-efficient system will be economically profitable.

The Sollefteå Hospital in Northern Sweden decided to opt for the system supplier Green & Cool as the environmental sustainability of its future refrigeration system was a top priority. Thus, the new R744 system is replacing an installation working with the high global warming refrigerant HFC-134a. In the short period of operation, the CO2 transcritical refrigeration system has already proved its efficient cooling of nursing, device, communication central and computer rooms, combining both reliability and safety.

Green & Cool's installation, consisting of two water-chilled refrigeration units, does not only cut direct greenhouse gas emissions to nearly zero, but also leads to significant energy savings. Measurements in the hospital have indicated that the use of electricity will be significant reduced, partly due to the use of CO2 technology.

--image1--Innovative cooling solution

The refrigeration system, installed by the Swedish company Frys&Kyl AB, uses free cooling to enhance its seasonal performance. During winter, the outdoor air is used to provide cooling, replacing the chillers of 150 kW. During summer, the water-chilled system can be fed with outdoor chill from the river water. For the heating of tap water, the system recovers heat from existing kitchen chiller units and compressed air.

  • 2 water-chilled refrigeration units type VMHT 4140 with a cooling effect of 150 kW
  • Compressors: each refrigeration unit contains 4 Dorin compressors
  • Gas heat exchanger: warming power of 40 KW
  • Gas cooler: works with 40% ethylen glycol in a temperature of +25 to -40°C
