HVAC&R Japan: R744 solutions in the focus

CO₂ hot water heat pumps (Eco Cute) will be staring the presentations of several leading Japanese manufacturers at Japan’s largest trade show for the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry opening its doors today, Tuesday 12 February. The focus on ever more energy-efficient R744 models is in line with the theme selected for this year's HVAC&R Japan event: "What we can do", which is understood by Japanese industry players both as a call for more innovative products, and an urgent challenge to reduce environmental burdens. Since the entry of the Kyoto Protocol in 2005, Japanese manufacturers, including Sanyo, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Denso, Fujikoki, and Matsushita, have spurred the development of environmentally friendly equipment that, they hope, will lead a worldwide modernization of the entire industry. The 35^th expo for HVAC&R sector is therefore the right showcase for residential, as well as commercial heat pumps and display cases using CO₂ as a refrigerant. Suppliers of R744 components, such as Embraco for compressors and Inficon for leak detectors, will also be present.

For the third time, JRAIA and the “Heat Pump and Thermal Storage Center of Japan (HPTCJ)” have invited specialists in the field of natural refrigerants from all around the world to discuss present technologies, market trends, standards, and future prospects of natural refrigerants, including CO₂ (R744). The international seminar will be held on 15 February to accompany the HVAC&R Japan 2008. The following lectures on natural refrigerants are scheduled:

• "Natural refrigerants in Europe: Research, development, and use" - Björn Palm, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden
• "Status of natural working fluids for heat pumping devices in Germany" - Felix Ziegler, Institute for Energy Engineering, Technical University of Berlin, Germany
• "Recent research and development activities with natural refrigerants in Korea" - Min Soo Kim, School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Seoul National University, Korea
• "Current status of CO₂ compressors and expanders" - Mitsuhiro Fukuta, Shizuoka University
• "Development of non-fluorinated energy-saving refrigeration and air conditioning systems in Japan" - Eiji Hihara, The University of Tokyo

An "International Symposium on New Refrigerants and Environmental Technology" scheduled for 20-21 November 2008, will continue the discussions around compressors and lubricants, system requirements for new refrigerants, as well as automotive air conditioners. Background

The HVAC&R Japan 2008, to be held from 12-15 February in Tokyo, is organized every two years by the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA). The organizers expect to attract even more visitors than in 2006, when more than 28,000 individuals visited the trade show.
