CO2 products to capture fast growing seafood processing industry

Last week, the freezer, chiller and ice machine manufacturers from around the globe met in Brussels for one of the biggest trade shows about seafood and its processing technologies. Since the seafood market is expected to continue to grow internationally by 25% by 2015 and legislative pressure to find environmentally friendly alternatives raises, a growing market share also for CO2 solutions can be expected. R744.com was on the exhibition ground to report about latest developments for

The European Seafood Exhibition took place from 23-25 April 2012 in Brussels. Several manufacturers that R744.com talked to gave an optimistic forecast for the development of CO2 technology within the seafood industry for the smaller applications. Flake ice machine manufacturer MAJA and others stated for example that the end-users are specifically asking for CO2 alternatives to meet legislative and company targets to reduce CO2 emissions.

The perception of higher investment costs of CO2 systems was dispersed by DSI’s Mads Sigsgaard who stated that their vertical and horizontal plate freezer using CO2 or ammonia have the same price as the freezers using any other refrigerant.

CO2 products on display

An entire hall was dedicated to seafood processing technologies. R744.com visited the exhibitors and gives a selection of the most interesting CO2 technologies:

MAJA: The company’s CO2 flake ice machines are highly popular in French supermarkets. Many of the big and smaller supermarket chains there prefer the CO2 units to integrate better with their already existing or planned centralised CO2 refrigeration systems. MAJA’s RVH CO2-D line consists of 7 different models with direct carbon dioxide operation and ice output from 500kg to 3800kg per 24 hours.

DSI: The expert for plate freezers for on-shore and marine installations DSI has already 500 CO2 plate freezers in operation mainly in and around Europe. The company explained that with the phasing out of HCFCs in Europe, the change to CO2 freezers on board is even more efficient as with CO2 you can reach temperature down to -50°C (HCFCs reach -38 to -40°C).

Besides its CO2 vertical and horizontal plate freezers, DSI presented its new CorePoint temperature measuring system that can control precisely the core temperature of the product and save therefore time, energy and CO2 emissions.

GEA: As part of the GEA Group, GEA GENEGLACE SAS offers CO2 refrigeration and freezing solutions. At their booth they informed about the company’s Geneglace Flake Ice Generators that are also suitable for CO2 for smaller capacities producing between 300kg and 500kg of flake ice in 24h.

Yantai Moon: Besides the company’s ammonia compressors on display, Yantai Moon also informed about their CO2 screw compressors and their new CO2 cooler. Moon Group’s ammonia/CO2 technology is part of UNDP’s demonstration project for conversion from HCFC-22 for cold storage and freezing applications and the company produced China’s first domestically made NH3/CO2 screw cascade refrigeration system (SCRS) in 2008.

About the seafood market and the European Seafood Exhibition

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), seafood consumption worldwide reached an all-time high last year, with an average of nearly 37 pounds (around 17kg) per person. In addition, global consumption of fish and seafood has doubled since 1973 and is expected to increase globally by another 25% by 2015.

Co-located with the European Seafood Exposition is Seafood Processing Europe (SPE), an event that represents every aspect of seafood processing, including Refrigeration/Freezing Equipment & Supplies, Primary Processing Equipment, Secondary Processing Equipment and more.
