With the aim of reinforcing its brand image, increasing its energy efficiency and decreasing its environmental impact, the supermarket chain ShopRite, known in North America for its commitment to organic, local and specialty foods, has installed Hill PHOENIX Second Nature SNMT and SNLT2 systems at their new facility in Hatfield, Pennsylvania.
The retailer has selected the Hill PHOENIX Second Nature SNMT medium temperature system that circulates a medium temperature secondary coolant system using glycol and a SNLT2 low temperature system, which circulates liquid CO2 as a refrigerant. Second Nature refrigeration systems use lower refrigerant charges, operate at lower pressures, and operate more efficiently, utilizing 100% of the heat transfer surface.
For meat and seafood merchandising, ShopRite has chosen Hill PHOENIX Coolgenix display case technology, which uses conduction heat transfer technology to preserve product freshness while virtually eliminating weight loss. This increases product integrity for merchandising and reduces shrink, specifically reducing labor and waste.

GreenChill Gold standards for sustainable refrigeration..
In order to achieve gold-level certification, GreenChill standards require that a food retail store uses only non-ozone-depleting refrigerants. It must also achieve an average HFC refrigerant charge of no more than 1.25 pounds of refrigerant per 1,000 BTU per hour and a total evaporator cooling load and a storewide annual refrigerant emissions rate of no more than 15 percent.
“It is important for us and for the community that ShopRite is environmentally responsible with our refrigeration technology,” said Jim Madanci, ShopRite's director of operations. “Our investment in sustainability sends a strong message to our customers, our vendors and our community,” he adds.

- Utilizes glycol as a secondary coolant for the medium-temperature system and CO2 as a secondary refrigerant for the low-temperature system.
- A CO2 pump, typically installed as a primary pump with a parallel backup pump, delivers liquid CO2 through the supply distribution piping to evaporators designed specifically for glycol and CO2.
- CO2 has better heat transfer properties compared to conventional HFCs.
- Both medium-temperature and low-temperature evaporators designed for fully flooded secondary operation.
- Display cases and coolers are equipped with solenoid valves, which control the flow of glycol and CO2 into the evaporators.
