The German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety has initiated a fourth competition for innovative and climate friendly solutions in the refrigeration sector. This time, a selection of small businesses will be funded with a total of €52,500. The winners will be announced in March 2011, while applications are accepted until 31 December 2011.

The German Environment Ministry is for the 4th time calling for submissions under the German Refrigeration Award from innovators advancing the use of refrigeration technologies with a lower carbon footprint than traditional systems. Previous editions of the award have recognised a number of technologies using natural working fluids.

The award categories

This year’s winners, to be announced in March 2012, will be funded with prizes ranging from €10,000 to €2,500.

2012 German Refrigeration Award will this time be granted in 3 categories:
  • Special application of refrigeration or air-conditioning technology
  • Innovation in the area of air-conditioning or refrigeration technology
  • Installation of refrigeration or air-conditioning systems by small enterprises

This year the award is specifically addressed to small businesses with less than 50 employees,

Applications forms, accessible through www.co2online.de/kaelte, have to be submitted by email to kaeltepreis@co2online.be by December 31, 2011.

Rationale for the awards

By 2020 the Merkel Administration aims to reduce electric power consumption by 11%. Refrigeration and air conditioning systems are responsible for around 70 million tons of CO2 emissions each year, accounting for about 15% of the total energy consumption (there are about 120 million of refrigerators in Germany),.

“Experts believe that energy savings of 35% and sometimes even 75% are possible through introduction of energy efficiency measures. The refrigeration and air conditioning industry can make a significant contribution to climate change targets set by the federal government.” Says Tanja Loitz, the general director of co2online GmbH, responsible for the practical organisation of the project.
