Alfa Laval is launching new high pressure-rated brazed heat exchanger models AXP10 and AXP14 for transcritical CO2 systems for the transport refrigeration, commercial refrigeration and heat pump markets. The new models provide efficient heat transfer while saving space and weight.

World-leading supplier of compact heat exchangers, Alfa Laval, has announced that it will expand its range of high pressure-rated brazed plate heat exchangers by adding models AXP10 and AXP14. Designed to fulfill the needs when using CO2 as a refrigerant in subcritical and transcritical applications, the new models can accordingly withstand operating pressures of more than 140 bar without any external reinforcement. Moreover, a patented stainless steel construction significantly cuts down the amount of materials used and reduces space requirements.

AXP10 and AXP14 applications

The application spectrum for these heat exchangers is wide and covers CO2 heat pump hot water systems, CO2 supermarket chiller installations, and commercial air conditioning systems. The new heat exchangers are designed to cover heat recovery duties, gas coolers, condensers, sub-coolers and suction gas heaters. More specifically:
  • The AXP10 brazed heat exchanger for transcritical CO2 was specially developed for the heat pump and transport refrigeration markets.
  • The AXP14 was developed to meet the needs of the small capacity range for the commercial refrigeration and heat pump markets.
Commercial refrigeration with CO2 developing rapidly

These new models come as CO2-based commercial refrigeration is gaining popularity. “The emerging market for commercial refrigeration with CO2 is developing rapidly, especially in Europe,” says Rolf Christensen, Business Development Manager Refrigeration at Alfa Laval. ”Already, some supermarket chains have taken the decision to install refrigeration equipment with natural refrigerants like CO2 as it turns out to be a sustainable and efficient refrigerant especially when considering heat recovery.”
